N-Suke Yamanaka (N-すけ山中, Yamanaka Enu-Suke) is a police inspector who appeared in the manga pilot.
Yamanaka is fat short tall man with white hairs, thick eyebrows and he wears a suit with a plaid tie. He is also a smoker and keen observer of details.
PlotEditHe, along with Takagi, was to investigate the events at the Taro Kagami's school, so that the five classmates died of a heart attack. Soon after, they interrogate Miura, since he was bullied by the bullies who died. So that end, they go home to Taro, to ask him if he knows something. When they finish, Yamanaka realize the restlessness of Taro and begins to relate the events with the 1978 or '79 (Takara Bank, Yamashita Branch) in which two people die of heart attack and later, others die of accidental deaths. After the five students return to life, they go to Taro's school, to ask them questions about what happened the day they died, but when they went to answer, the five die again and Yamanaka and Takagi, too.
Later, Taro realize it was Miura that killed them, using the Death Note and sends him off the names with the Death Eraser. They go to the Police Station to speak of the notebook, but they do not. When the boys test themselves, Yamanaka burning the notebook without knowing that there was another.
- Yamanaka, Ukita, Wedy, Matt and Demegawa are the only characters in the series who smoke (in the anime though, the scene where Ukita smoked wasn't shown).
- It should be noted that "N-Suke Yamanaka" is not this character's real name, as it is stated at the beginning of the pilot that all "victims" have had their names changed in order to protect their identity.
