Pursuit (追跡, Tsuiseki) is the fourth episode of the Death Note anime.
Light Yagami explains to Ryuk that he is trying to create an ideal world where no criminals are left unpunished, and "as the god of such a world", he cannot sacrifice half his life for the Shinigami Eyes, as that would limit his reign. The protagonist then goes on to wonder how much control he can have over the deaths of criminals and decides to experiment. Light's father is soon puzzled at the odd reports he receives — as is L. 6 prisoners are dead, 3 in odd circumstances. One drew a pentagram in his own blood; the second wrote a rambling note; the third escaped then died in a toilet. However Light was not able to get prisoners to draw L's face, or escape to France in an hour or write 'I know L suspects the Japanese police', learning that even the Death Note is not that powerful. Hacking into the police computer records, Light discovers that L doesn't want this to be reported to the media. Later, in an attempt to kill the tracker who is following him, Light creates a plan but is careful not to arouse the suspicion of the tracker, who is really a Federal Agent from the United States named Raye Penber, employed by L and Watari.
Light gets a date to Spaceworld with a classmate of his, Yuri, who has a huge crush on him; this is to divert suspicion. Penber, though becoming less suspicious of Light, follows him onto the bus to Spaceworld, sitting directly behind the "couple". At 11:31, as planned by Light, a drug dealer and murderer named Kiichiro Osoreda gets onto the bus and points a gun at the driver. As Osoreda moves up and down the aisle in his hijacking, Light remains calm and hands a note to Yuri, saying he will use a move his father taught him to knock out Osoreda. Penber notices this and tries to talk Light out of it, due to its risks. Light then accuses Penber of being affiliated with Osoreda. With no other choice, Penber shows Light his ID to prove his innocence, allowing Light to get his name. After handing back the ID, Light drops the paper in the aisle and reaches to pick it back up. Osoreda sees this and picks up the note, which is actually plans for a date. However, the plans were written from a page in the Death Note, causing Osoreda to see Ryuk. Intrigued, Ryuk walks towards Osoreda, who panics and wastes his bullets trying to shoot Ryuk. At 11:45, he tries to escape Ryuk and the bus, but as he does, he is struck and killed by a white sedan. As everyone gets situated and Light resumes the date, he notes that Raye Penber will be the next to die.
Death Note Rules RevealedEdit
- If the time of death is written within 40 seconds after writing the cause of death as a heart attack, the time of death can be manipulated, and the time can go into effect within 40 seconds after writing the name.
- When Light is running his tests, he writes that all six criminals will die in one hour at 6 P.M. This would mean that it is 5 P.M. when Light writes their names down. This is impossible because Light's cram school, which he has just returned from, doesn't start until 6:30 P.M. as shown in Episode 1. It is also pitch-dark outside at the start of this episode, while it was still light out when Light left for cram school in the first episode.
